Howth – Steep Hillside Garden

Set on the side of the rocky hillside of Howth Head, this steep sloping garden presented as a big challenge to design and construct. Burnt Oak Sleepers, local stone terraced walls create accessible space within the garden for planting and relaxation. The planting was carefully selected with a dominance of ornamental grasses and perennials along with selected multi-stem shrubs and dwarf pines.

Not only a challenging garden to design but the implementation was ten times tougher with no machinery access to the rear garden. This meant that all imported materials, soil and plants had to be carried by hand up approximately 30 steps to get to ordinary ground level and then another 40 more to get to the top level.
